Irene Berry

Irene Banks Berry, 96, formerly of Cowpens and Converse, SC, died Thursday, May 26, 2016, at White Oak Manor-Spartanburg. Born February 21, 1920, in Buncombe County, NC, she was a native of Pacolet Mills, SC and the youngest child of the late Henry and Florence Vehaun Banks and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the widow of Cole L. Berry. Irene worked for Clifton Manufacturing Company for many years. She was a longtime member of Converse Baptist Church and faithfully attended as long as she was able. She was also a Sunday School teacher and choir member. Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Cornelia Berry Abenante (Ron Davis) of New Bern and Maggie Valley, NC, and Catherine Berry Hutcherson (Malcolm) of Chesnee, SC; grandchildren, Alan L. Linder (Belinda) of Jacksonville, NC, Arnold L. Linder (Rebecca) of Spartanburg, SC, Aaron L. Linder (Tammy) of Woodruff, SC, Dean Berry (Penny) of Converse, SC, Darryl Berry (Teresa) of Pacolet, SC, and Heath Berry of Cowpens, SC; 13 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Coley Dean Berry; six brothers; and one sister. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday, May 29, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, May 30, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. Norman Philbeck. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Converse Baptist Church General Fund, PO Box 159, Converse, SC 29329; or White Oak Manor, 295 East Pearl Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
