Hugh Hayes

Hugh Leroy Hayes, 65, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, February 14, 2010. Born April 28, 1944 in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Lucian Leroy and Annie Marie Gwinn Hayes. He attended Spartanburg High School and Wofford College where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-1968. He was the former owner of Hayes Construction Company and Hayes Home Inspection Company and a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Dr. Ashley Hayes and her husband Dr. Damien Grattan-Smith of Atlanta, GA, Ellison Hayes Starnes of Spartanburg, and Virginia Hayes Wood and her husband Toby of Spartanburg; six grandchildren, William, Robert and Meredith Grattan-Smith, William and Caroline Starnes and Susannah Wood; a sister, Dora Hayes Rousey and her husband Jimmy of Fort Worth, Texas. He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Hayes Maxwell. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside. Memorials may be made to the Wofford College Terrier Club, 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or to a charity of one's choice.
