F. Hugh Atkins, 81, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, January 30, 2015 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born October 3, 1933 in Boiling Springs, he was the son of the late Wofford and Lucille Atkins. Mr. Atkins was a U.S. Army Veteran; a graduate of Clemson University; served in leadership position in the Spartanburg and State Real Estate industry for over 40 years; was a founding member and first President of Spartanburg Homebuilders Association; President of South Carolina Homebuilders Association; President of Spartanburg Board of Realtors; along with being in the S.C. Homebuilder's Hall of Fame. In 1995, he received the Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest honor recognizing his various boards of commission, which included being a Chairman of Spartanburg County Planning and Development Commission, served on the State Development Board; Chairman of South Carolina Department of Transportation. He was also a Chairman and delegate for the election of President Ronald Regan campaign and a delegate for the Republican National Convention. Along with his leadership roles in the community, he was active in his church, Mobile Meals and Goodfellows program. He was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He and Nettie loved to sing in the choir. They also loved singing with friends on the boat at their Lake Bowen choir group. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Nettie Allgood Atkins; daughters Melody Atkins (Kent) Shull and Dr. Daphne Lanette Atkins, both of Spartanburg; granddaughters, Nettie Katherine Shull and Amelia Franklin Atkins, both of Spartanburg; sisters Peggy Mitchell of Liberty, and Barbara Ashley of Spartanburg; a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Anne Caroline Shull and a brother, Ray Atkins. Visitation will be 1:00 - 4:00 PM Sunday, February 1, 2015, at the home. Funeral services will be Monday, February 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Paul M. Peterson. Burial with military rites will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P.O.
