Howard Robertson

Howard "Robbie" Mason Robertson, 93, died on Friday, November 17, 2017. He was born on September 16, 1924 in Brewton, Alabama. He was the son of the late Thomas Calloway Middleton Robertson and Annie Lee Robertson. During World War II, Robbie served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps as a cryptographer. After the war, he was employed by Southern Bell in Spartanburg, South Carolina from 1946-1962, in Easley, South Carolina from 1962-1964, in Orangeburg, South Carolina for a brief stint and in Columbia, South Carolina from 1964-1969 as a State Security Supervisor. In 1969, he was promoted to Operations Manager and transferred to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In 1987, he returned to Columbia, South Carolina where he was responsible for all security operations in the State. Robbie was involved in all phases of law enforcement investigations, and worked closely with many law enforcement agencies including city, county, SLED, FBI, DEA and the Secret Service. He retired from Bell South Corporation in May, 1989. Robbie was involved in local civic activities including the Lions Club, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, United Fund Board of Directors, and the Bell South Pioneers. He was a lifetime member of the Montgomery Masonic Lodge, Spartanburg, South Carolina, being a Mason for over fifty years. He loved to play tennis and was also an avid golfer, with a few hole-in-ones under his belt. He loved spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed reminiscing about his childhood and his work experiences. Robbie is survived by his wife of 71 years, Eleanor Daniel Robertson of Columbia, South Carolina; his son, Dr. Howard Mason Robertson, Jr. (Bonnie) of Huntsville, Alabama; his daughters, Cynthia Robertson Lavender (Tommy) of Columbia, South Carolina and Kristin Robertson Hickman (Brett) of Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Robbie was predeceased by his siblings, Ola Williams, Calloway Robertson Jr., Katherine Howard, Ruth Brooks, and Earl Robertson. A private family graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The family deeply appreciates the excellent care and compassion provided to Robbie by the NHC Parklane staff.
