Horace Hammon Hatchette, Jr. 85, of 801 Somerset Place, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at his home. Born June 8, 1925 in Spartanburg County, SC, he was the son of the late Horace Hammon Hatchette, Sr. and Amy Gladys Smith Hatchette and the husband of Judith Tattersall Hatchette. He was first married to the late Marian Burke Hatchette. A graduate of Wofford College, he retired from Sherwin Williams Company after 30 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher for over 35 years, a current teacher for the Layman's Sunday School Class, a current member of the Shadetree Musicians, a former deacon, and served on numerous boards and committees at the church. He was a Gideon, a former board member of Greater Spartanburg Ministries, a 32nd degree Mason, past Master of St. John's Lodge # 333 AFM, and a US Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific as a combat engineer. He loved his wife, family, church, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, the great outdoors and nature, but most of all his Lord and Savior. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Amy S. Fletcher of Spartanburg; a son, Horace H. "Chuck" Hatchette, III and wife Ansie of Spartanburg; two sisters, Norma Kibler of Greensboro, NC and Mary Hazel Hatchette of Charlotte, NC; four grandsons, Millard Hammon "Bo" Jones, William Turner Jones, Horace Hammon Hatchette IV, and David Burke Hatchette, all of Spartanburg; one step-son, Kevin Lee Cooper and wife Sheila, two step-grandchildren, Amber Lynn Cooper and Bradley Scott Cooper, all of Bentonville AR. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:45 AM Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Southside Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 Noon at the church, conducted by the Rev. David M. Blanton and the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Littlejohn. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary Escort will be the Layman's Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 3103, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or to Southside Baptist Church Global Missions Fund, 316 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family is at their respective homes.
