Herman Martin Davis Jr., 73, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, December 2, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born August 15, 1940, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Herman Martin Davis Sr. and Genevia Hollifield Davis. Mr. Davis attended Pacolet Mills Elementary and Pacolet High School. He attended the University of Virginia where he was the interim swimming coach. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music Performance-Piano Degrees from Wofford and Converse College in 1964, and went on to complete his graduate work in 1965 at Converse College. He taught music for 24 years and performed professionally as a pianist for nearly 40 years. Special awards and events: Spartanburg County Foundation Scholarship Winner-Wofford College, Band and Glee Club (accompanist), State and Jr. Olympic Title holder-swimming while in High School, Swimming Coach-Spartanburg County Aquatic Association, Soloist-Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra, auditioned acts for Ed Sullivan, Lawrence Welk, Dick Clark, worked for CBS, ABC, and NBC through Bob Cox TV Screen Auditions (High School), Organist/Minister of Music from age 13 to the present. His church involvement includes: Tenor Soloist/Assistant Organist-2nd Presbyterian Church Spartanburg, first Choir Director/Organist-Fernwood Baptist Church, Choir Director/Organist-Tryon First Baptist Church, Tryon, NC, Choir Director/Organist-Hinton Avenue Methodist Church, Charlottesville, VA, Bass Soloist/Assistant Organist-Episcopal Church of the Advent, Spartanburg, SC, Choir Director/Organist-West Main Street Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC, Minister of Music-Pacolet Mills Baptist Church, Organist/Choir Director-Covenant Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC, Choir Director/Pianist-Moore First Baptist Church, Moore, SC, Director of Music-Pacolet First Baptist Church, Pacolet, SC, Pianist-Trinity Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC. Employment history includes: Garment Industry, Milliken and Company, Burlington Industries, Bibb Company, Thomeston Mills, Holding Development Corporation-Vice President. Survivors include his beloved wife of 25 years, Fran C. Davis; sons, Herman Martin Davis III "Chip" of Spartanburg, SC, and Brian Neal Davis of Panama City, FL; daughters, Kristen C. Prutsman and Lindsey C. Leonard (Charles), all of Spartanburg, SC; and grandchildren, Alexa Davis, Cord Davis, Gavin Prutsman, and Titus Cudd. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. Andrew Dionne. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family is at the home.
