Herbert Alvin Lanford, Jr., 75, of Spartanburg and Columbia, SC, died Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. A native of Spartanburg, he was born on February 19, 1948, and son of the late Herbert Alvin and Ruth Thomason Lanford.
He was a retired deputy director with the SC Human Affairs Commission in Columbia with 33 years of service. He was a member of the Five Points Rotary Club in Columbia, a member of the Executive Board of the National Rifle Association since 1984, served on the board of directors of the SC State Credit Union, graduate of Wofford College and a veteran of the US Army. He received the Order of the Palmetto on July 10, 2009, given by Governor Mark Sanford.
Surviving are his brother, Tom Lanford of Spartanburg; sister, Joanne L. Hensley of Wrightwood, CA.; nieces and nephews, Kamyla Hensley, Kara Kaplan, Katy Haviland, Kasi Hensley, Sean Lanford and Leslie Stewart.
Graveside services with Military honors will be held at 4:00 pm Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Visitation will be at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Rifle Association, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, Va 22030.
