Herbert Blackwood, Sr.

Herbert D. Blackwood, Sr., 95, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Eden Terrace. Born July 28, 1918, in Gadsden, AL, he was the son of the late Lonnie and Ruby Parker Blackwood. A U. S. Navy veteran, Mr. Blackwood served with the Seabees in the Philippines during World War II. He was a former store manager at Goodyear Service Store and was employed by Goodyear for over 20 years. He later retired from Arrow Automotive as manager of Marketing Services. A member of First Presbyterian Church, he was very active in church business for many years. He also volunteered with Mobile Meals, was an avid golfer, and loved spending time at Pawley's Island and Litchfield Beach. Survivors include his beloved wife of 73 years, Virginia Trusler Blackwood of Spartanburg; son, Herbert DeWitt Blackwood, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Elizabeth Blackwood of Greenville, SC, David Blackwood of Pittsburgh, PA, and Sean Philips of Austin, TX; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Blackwood Philips. Visitation will be 4:00-6:00 PM Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 30, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans and the Rev. Joanne Hull. Visitation will follow in the church parlor. Burial will be private. No flowers please, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church General Fund, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
