Mrs. Mattie Helen Anthony Grant passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA. Born in Spartanburg, SC, in 1925, she was the daughter of the late Paul Combee Anthony, Sr. and Bertie Earle Poole Anthony. Mrs. Grant was a member of the Annandale United Methodist Church in Virginia. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School Class of 1942 and Cecil's Business College. Mrs. Grant worked as a bookkeeper for Western Union for 12 years. Following her marriage to Walter Ervin Grant, she continued her career at the Naval Officers Club and several auto dealerships in Annapolis, Maryland. After arrival of her children, she became a loving and outstanding mother and homemaker. Mrs. Grant is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Walter Ervin Grant, formerly of Chester, South Carolina; two sons, Walter Anthony Grant of Mesa, Arizona and Howard Ethan Grant of Huntington Beach, California. Of eight brothers and sisters, she is survived by three brothers, Howard Anthony of Rockville, Maryland, Donald Anthony and Carroll Anthony of Spartanburg, SC, two sisters, Mary Lou Lefcort of New York City, NY, and Lila Anthony of Spartanburg, SC; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 23, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307, with the Reverend Robert Strother officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
