Helen Ward Alspaugh, 98, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, at White Oak Estates-Spartanburg. Born September 11, 1913, in Winston-Salem, NC, she was the widow of James Hoke Alspaugh, and daughter of the late Luther Ayers and Birttie Davis Ward. Mrs. Alspaugh was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and played violin, for 80 years, locally and in churches. She was a 1931 graduate of Salem Academy and studied violin at Converse College. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Faith Y. Alspaugh of Spartanburg; granddaughters, Jordan Alspaugh Holst, her husband Andreas, and three great-grandsons, of Germany, and Catherine Lauren Alspaugh of North Carolina. She was predeceased by a son, James David Alspaugh. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. David B. Smith. Visitation will follow in the chapel. A committal service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 12, 2012, in Clemmons Moravian Church Cemetery, Clemmons, NC, by the Rev. Ray Burke.
