Helen Alspaugh

Helen Ward Alspaugh, 98, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, at White Oak Estates-Spartanburg. Born September 11, 1913, in Winston-Salem, NC, she was the widow of James Hoke Alspaugh, and daughter of the late Luther Ayers and Birttie Davis Ward. Mrs. Alspaugh was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and played violin, for 80 years, locally and in churches. She was a 1931 graduate of Salem Academy and studied violin at Converse College. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Faith Y. Alspaugh of Spartanburg; granddaughters, Jordan Alspaugh Holst, her husband Andreas, and three great-grandsons, of Germany, and Catherine Lauren Alspaugh of North Carolina. She was predeceased by a son, James David Alspaugh. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, by the Rev. David B. Smith. Visitation will follow in the chapel. A committal service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 12, 2012, in Clemmons Moravian Church Cemetery, Clemmons, NC, by the Rev. Ray Burke. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 S. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
