Harriet Stox

May 31, 1938 — February 2, 2016

Harriet Thompson Stox passed away February 2, 2016 in Spartanburg, SC. Devoted mother, doting grandmother, generous friend, she is missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves behind her sons, Joel Burdick (Donna) and Greg Burdick (Michele), step-son, Bob Stox (Carol), grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Burdick, Matthew and James Burdick, and Kristen and Kathleen Stox. Born in Rahway, NJ on May 31, 1938, Harriet attended Cedar Crest College and finished her teaching degree at UCLA extension school. She and her husband, the late Dick Stox, retired to Spartanburg, SC in 1989 and became a vital part of the community. Harriet was active in the Carolina Country Club, First Presbyterian Church, and Questers. For years she helped sort books as part of Friends of the Library, enjoying the work as much as the camaraderie of the women with whom she volunteered. An accomplished artist, she refused any payment for her creations but contributed her talents to numerous fundraising efforts. Her love of art led to a life as a world-traveler covering the globe by boat and plane. One of her fondest trips was with her grandsons to Paris and Rome in 2011. She thought nothing of flying across the country several times a year to CA or driving up to NJ in order to spend time with her family. She was an avid reader of everything from novels to non-fiction to the daily newspaper. A cup of coffee and the Wall Street Journal guaranteed a good start to her day! Somehow she found time for several bridge groups, book clubs, and supper clubs and would still bring food and her joyful spirit to those in need. She surrounded herself with friends who found her giving, welcoming, bright, sophisticated, and yet down to earth. She was deeply loved and admired and is already greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mobile Meals www.mobilemeals.com or the Rhesa Purnell Endowment Fund at First Presbyterian Church www.fpcspartanburg.org/give/why-we-give.
