Harold Roberts, 91, of 110 Fernbrook Circle, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. A native of Asheville, NC, he was born June 13, 1918, to the late A. Lon Roberts and Addie Edwards Roberts. He attended Wake Forest University, was a member of Gamma Eta Gamma fraternity, and did his graduate study at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Oklahoma. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the European Theatre of Operations and the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations in the U. S. Army Air Corp and established the Joint Air Traffic System with the United Kingdom, French, and U.S. Air Corp, and later as Air Traffic Approach Control in England and Germany. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration, having served 34 years with his last assignment as Facility Chief in Asheville and local area coordinator for Western North Carolina. He was an honorary member of Western North Carolina Pilots Association. He was a member of the Order of Masons, Rotary International, a life deacon of Asheville First Baptist Church, and a member of Spartanburg First Baptist Church and the Bob Morgan Sunday School Class. He served as secretary of Green Hills Cemetery Association in Asheville for 41 years. He is survived by his wife, Montrose Simmons Roberts of the home; a son, Harold S. "Hal" Roberts and wife Rosemary Moody Roberts of Spartanburg; a daughter, Jean Roberts Love of Arlington, VA; a brother, George M. Roberts and wife Agnes R. of Asheville; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis L. Roberts of Asheville. He was predeceased by brothers, Arthur Lee Roberts, Charles A. Roberts, William Rodney Roberts, Jr., and Roy F. Roberts; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Roberts. Visitation will be 9:30-10:15 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bill Adams.
