Harold Vernon Riddle, 76, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, July 31, 2011, at his home. Born January 28, 1935, in Glendale, SC, he was the son of the late George Wilson and Julia Ruth Sherbert Riddle. Mr. Riddle was a U. S. Air Force veteran and retired as an Administration Technician after 20 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church-Cowpens, a former deacon, Sunday School teacher, and song leader. As a musician, Vernon won the SC State Fiddling Competition Championship, the Lunsford Award for Significant Contributions in Music in 2007, and was the recipient of the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award in 1999. He was a graduate of Spartanburg Technical College. Survivors include his wife, Ruth B. Riddle of the home; a sister, Emma Jett (Gene) of Glendale; sister-in-law, Cecelia Riddle of Spartanburg; step-sons, Mike Stewart (Camille) of Greer, James Stewart (Gina) of Cummings, GA, and David Stewart (Missy) of Suwannee, GA; step-granddaughters, Amber McDowell (Travis), Tina Weatherly, Kay Tyrrell (Kevin), and Sloan Manley (Graham); great-grandchildren, Noah and Aaron McDowell, Ross and Jack Tyrrell, Henry and Camille Manley, and Savannah and Magnolia Stewart. He was predeceased by his first wife, Grace Riddle; a sister, Evelyn Jett; and a brother, Paul Riddle. Visitation will be 1:00-2:15 PM Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 PM, in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Henry Coley. Burial with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
