Harold William Pettit, 85, of Louisville, KY, formerly of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at his home. Born September 13, 1923, in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late William E. and Essie Chapman Pettit. He was retired from Duke Energy after 31+ years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he was a former Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and usher. A U.S. Air Corps Veteran of World War II, he served in Europe in Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland, and Ardennes in Central Europe and was the recipient of several medals. Survivors include his wife, Joy Draper Pettit; two sons, Harold W. Pettit and his wife Brenda of West Palm Beach, FL, and John Draper Pettit and his wife Shannon of Gainesville, FL; a daughter, Dianne Pettit Van Horn and her husband Tom of Louisville, KY; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Teresa Foster and Phillip Foster; two grandchildren, Grace and John Pettit, Jr.; a brother, Jack Pettit; and a sister, Ruth Pettit. Visitation will be 2:30-3:45 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton and the Rev. Sal Barone. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
