H. P. Hammond, Sr., 95, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Harbor Chase of Columbia, SC. Born December 29, 1918, in Mobile, AL, he was the son of the late Horace Perley Hammond and Vinnie Pauline Womble Hammond and husband, for 73 years, of the late Mary Ella Muse Hammond. H. P. was active in Civitans and was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, serving as deacon, as well as Chairman of the Ushers for 35 years. He was owner of Rollins Supply, Hammond Real Estate, and Hammond Homes as a residential home construction business. He was an avid reader, amateur photographer, and traveled with his wife to 32 countries as well as every state in the union. H. P. was friend to many, a silent donor to causes and loved God, his wife and family above all. He was quick-minded and had a wicked sense of humor, even at the end of his life. He loved people and was never happier than surrounded by friends and family. He was a great husband and Dad and we are blessed to have known him. Among survivors are his daughter, Mary Lynn Hammond-Nettles of Charleston, SC; son, H. P. "Buddy" Hammond, Jr. (Kay) of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Kristy Hammond Rogers (Chris) of Greenville, SC, Brantlee Nettles (Jay Ward) of Raleigh, NC, Jay Nettles of Atlanta, GA, and Mark H. Nettles (Shanen) of McClellanville, SC; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Jack Hammond; and sister, Margarite Owen. Visitation will be 2:30-3:45 PM Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Morgan and eulogists Buddy Hammond and Mary Lynn Hammond-Nettles. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
