Gladys Wheeler

Gladys J. "Ma" Wheeler, 96, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Magnolia Manor-Spartanburg. Born November 12, 1916, in Oakfield, NY, she was the widow of William Patrick Wheeler and daughter of the late Peter and Josephine Pokszyk Matla. Mrs. Wheeler was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. She was a nurse at St. Jerome Hospital in Batavia, NY during World War II. Following the war, she became a private nurse until her retirement in 1979. Survivors include her children, Sharon Mensing (Rev. Glen) of Wisconsin, Jack Raymond Wheeler (Sherry) of Spartanburg, SC, and Carole Ann Phelps (Jim) of Rock Hill, SC; 12 grandchildren, Joseph "Joey" Cogdill of Wisconsin, Rev. Ed Traxler, Rosemary Ellis, David Traxler, John Traxler, Andy Wheeler, all of Spartanburg, SC, Melany Talley of Willow Spring, NC, Jacob Phelps of Oxford, MS, Lisa Wheeler, Andrea Wheeler, Donna Kuchen, all of Wisconsin, and Angela Wheeler of Connecticut; 25 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and nephew, Ronnie Matla of New York. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Patrick Peter Wheeler. Prayers will be offered during the 5:00 PM Saturday, January 5, 2013, Vigil Mass at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, January 7, 2013, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 292 Munn Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715, by the Rev. John P. Giuliani. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304. The family will gather at the home of Jack & Sherry Wheeler, 3986 Walnut Grove Road, Roebuck, SC 29376 and Carole Ann and Jim Phelps, 1616 Shetland Lane, Rock Hill, SC 29730.
