Gladys Atkins

July 31, 1927 — January 19, 2011

Mrs. Gladys Mae Atkins, 83, of 238 Grady Avenue, Tryon, NC and formerly of Spartanburg, SC went home to be with the Lord peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at Smith-Phayer Hospice House in Landrum, SC. Born July 31, 1927 in Mayo, SC, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Clevia Bolton Murray and the dedicated and loving wife of the late Ret. Capt. (USMC) Darrell R. Atkins. Mrs. Atkins was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church and was formerly employed by S&S Manufacturing. Gladys touched many people throughout her life with her beautiful smile, kind words and gentle spirit. Survivors include one daughter, Gwen Rhymer of Tryon, NC; one son, Darrell R. Atkins, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Inman, SC; five granddaughters, Kim Matthews Camby and her husband Sean of Spartanburg, SC, Courtney Rhymer Vaughan and her husband Ashley of Chesnee, SC, Arin Rhymer Ravan and her husband Lucas of Columbus, NC, Allison Atkins Williams and her husband Jeff of Spartanburg, SC, Cayla Rhymer Owens and her husband Seth of Inman, SC; one grandson, Trey Atkins and his wife Emily of Inman, SC; five great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Lindsay Camby, Elli and Macklin Vaughan, Abby Ravan; one expected great-grandchild, Clancy Emery Vaughan; one sister, Sandra Bryant of Walterboro, SC; one brother, Ronnie Bolton and his wife Judy of Boiling Springs, SC. She was preceded in death by one sister, Agnes Toney of Spartanburg, SC. Visitation will be 11:00-11:45 AM Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Michael Coward. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex. The family wishes to express special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Hospice Care of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC for their care, comfort and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722. The family is at the home of the son and daughter-in-law, Darrell R.
