Gilbert Powell, Sr.

Gilbert Dale Powell, Sr., 83, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Born in Spartanburg on August 13, 1938, he was the son of the late William Oscar and Hester Pilkington Powell, and loving husband to the late Flora Marrujo Powell.

A veteran of the Unites States Air Force, Gilbert enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and spending time in the great outdoors. He was a graduate of Cowpens High School Class of 1957. Gilbert loved his Lord and served as Deacon of Clifton Second Baptist Church before joining First Baptist North Spartanburg.

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Hart; a son, Danny Lee Powell; two granddaughters, Ashley Hart and Brittany Millan (Ronnie); three grandsons, Justin Powell (Stephanie), Jacob Powell, and Bentley Powell; five great-grandchildren; a brother, John “J.D.” Powell; and a daughter-in-law, Tracy Powell. Along with his wife and parents, Gilbert was predeceased by a son, Gilbert Dale Powell, Jr.; a brother, William Kenneth Powell; and parents-in-law, T.L. “Joe” and Isabel Castillo Marrujo.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Shannon Lowe and Linda Hamrick for their excellent care and to Cindy Hodge for being his caring Hospice nurse.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by The Rev. Dr. Michael Hamlet and musician Rev. Chris Ellenburg. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
