Gerald Kenneth Petty, 81, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, January 18, 2016, at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum, SC. Born May 4, 1934, in Cooley Springs, SC, he was the son of the late J. C. Petty and Mary Dee Cooley Petty (his mother died when Gerald was a small child) and his step-mother, the late Beatrice Leverett Petty. Mr. Petty loved camping and music as well as restoring imported cars and motorcycles. He retired from Firestone Steel after 35 years of service and was a member of Fairview Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his son, Gerald D. Petty (Becky) of Boiling Springs, SC; granddaughter, Stephanie Petty of Boiling Springs, SC; great-granddaughters, Addison Petty and Charlee Grace Petty; brothers, J. K. Petty (Margaret) of Spartanburg, SC, and Danny Petty (Donna) of Poplar Springs, SC; sisters, Janice Jones (Bobby) of Roebuck, SC and Frankie Sheffield (Terry) of Greenville, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Ann Burgess Petty; and sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Jack Black. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Thursday, January 21, 2016, at Fairview Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, at the church, conducted by the Rev. Tim Hackett. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Memorials may be made to Fairview Freewill Baptist Church, 2058 Chesnee Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
