Georgie Dickerson

March 17, 1934 — April 1, 2013

Georgie Sue Julian Dickerson, 79, of Pacolet, died peacefully at her home on Monday, April 1, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Born March 17, 1934 in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Mamie Sue Reeves Julian and The Reverend George Washington Julian III. After graduating from White Plains High School in Pelzer, SC, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Terah Dickerson. They were married for sixty years, and their remarkable devotion to one another was an example to all who knew them, especially their five children. In 1961 with four young children and one on the way, the family left South Carolina when Bill was transferred to New York City. While living in New Jersey and as a busy young mother, Georgie began to pursue her dream of being a schoolteacher and enrolled at Patterson State University. The family of seven returned to South Carolina after 7 years, moving first to Greenwood, where Georgie completed her undergraduate education at Lander University, and then to Spartanburg where she earned a Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina. Georgie taught for many years at elementary schools in Abbeville and Spartanburg Counties and later served as a school guidance counselor before she retired. While a teacher by profession, Georgie was an accomplished, award-winning artist and writer as well, and she was famous for her chocolate chip pecan cookies. But above all, she was a woman of deep, abiding faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A member of Morningside Baptist Church, she shared her strong faith and commitment to prayer life with her family, friends, and all who knew her. In addition to her cherished husband Bill, she is survived by one daughter, Susie (Andy) White of Greenville; four sons, Dan (Kathy) of Greenwood, Scott (Susan) of Columbia, Jeff (Jane) of Spartanburg, and Andy (Teresa) of Landrum; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Jean Julian Harrison; and a brother, George Washington Julian IV. The family will receive friends 1:30-2:30 PM Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by The Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, 136 South Forest Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family is at the home.
