George Shala Wyant Sr., 89, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, October 26, 2017, at White Oak North Grove-Spartanburg. Born December 27, 1927, in Bessemer City, NC to the late Rash Clinton and Nettie Costner Wyont, he was the widower of his beloved wife of 62 years, Frances Barksdale Wyant. A graduate of Bessemer City High School and the John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN, Mr. Wyant worked with Harry and Bryant Funeral Home in Charlotte, NC for some years. At that time, he also served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He later began working as a salesman for the U. S. Gypsum Company in Charlotte and was transferred to Spartanburg selling building materials throughout areas of North and South Carolina. He began building homes during this time and home construction became his primary interest and enjoyment. He spent over 50 years building homes in Spartanburg County. He was a charter member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Spartanburg where he served as president, on the Board of Directors, and was an active member for over 50 years. He also served the community through the Piedmont Sertoma Club where he was a lifetime member. He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder as well as in many other areas of the church. He spent many afternoons playing golf and enjoyed playing bridge with friends and family. Survivors include his two sons, George S, Wyant, Jr. and wife, Mary, of Spartanburg and David M. Wyant and wife, Kathy, of Columbia; two daughters, Patty W. Hair and husband, William, of St. Matthews and Becky W. Dominey and husband, Brian, of Simpsonville; seven grandchildren, Spencer Wyant of Charlotte, NC, Melissa and Jacquelyn Wyant of Columbia, Daniel Hair and wife, Meredith, of St. Matthews, Olivia H. Smith and husband, Brooks, of St. Matthews, and Juston and Nathan Dominey of Simpsonville; great-grandson, Ashton Walker Hair; and one brother, Stowe Wyant of Charlotte, NC. He is predeceased by two sisters, Thelma Mobley and Alda Mae Hollman; and two brothers, Wilson Wyont and Forrest Wyont. Visitation will be 12:30-2:15 PM Sunday, October 29, 2017, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 PM with The Rev. Steve Wise and The Rev. Charles H. Horne officiating. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
