George Snyder

May 9, 1918 — September 6, 2009

George William Snyder died on Sunday, September 6, 2009, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born on May 9, 1918, he was a native of Greenwood, SC, and a resident for the past 12 years of Spartanburg, SC. He was the husband of Dorothy Holland Snyder and the son of the late Alfred Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Cork Snyder. Married to Dorothy for 67 years, he is survived by their daughter, Dorothy Holland Randall of Atlanta, GA, and son, George William Snyder, Jr and his wife Cindy of Sarasota, FL. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his sister Kate S. Gillison; three grandchildren, Matthew Snyder, Rachel Snyder, and Natasha Snyder; and Dorothy's sisters, Ernestine Holland White, Frances Holland Hardy, and Hazel Holland Belk. Known to his friends as Bill, he shared his childhood with eight brothers and sisters. He graduated from Greenwood High School and worked for the United States Postal Service before enlisting in the army to serve in World War II. He served in the European Theatre and took part in the Normandy invasion in 1944. He was decorated for his service during the war and in 2000 was recognized with the Normandy Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty. After returning from World War II, Bill received his Engineering Degree in Textile Engineering from Georgia Tech. He began a successful 34 year career with Eastman Chemical in Kingsport, TN, the chemical and fiber branch of Eastman Kodak. He served in many managerial roles with Eastman, and truly loved his work in international sales where he was able to cultivate frienships throughout the world. After retiring in 1983, he enjoyed golf and fellowship with his friends in Kingsport, before returning to South Carolina with Dorothy to enjoy the companionship of family and friends in Spartanburg. Bill's love and respect of God, people, and life was infectious. He shared that love, teaching teens at First Broad Street United Methodist Church in Kingsport, serving the community as a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Kingsport, and most of all with the loving and encouraging words that he always had for his family, friends, and everyone he met. The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel in Spartanburg, SC. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm. A private graveside service for the immediate family will take place following the chapel service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307; or to Mobile Meals Service, 419 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
