George Roper

George Edward Roper, 77, of Spartanburg, died Friday, May 6, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born May 19, 1933, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late George E. and Susan High Roper and husband of Frances Lawson Roper. Mr. Roper was retired from GMP International Union after 40 years of service to the membership and 32 years as an appointed and elected officer. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church and Poplar Springs Baptist Church. A veteran of the U. S. Air Force, he was a military police officer and a member of the USAF traveling basketball team. Other organizations which he participated in include; American Legion Post 28, Spartanburg County Workforce Investment Board, a past member of Three Pines Country Club in Woodruff, SC, the Civitan Club, and a member of The Old Timers Fast Pitch Hall of Fame. George was also a graduate of Robinson Business School. In addition to his wife, survivors include; a daughter, Renee Roper Hammett and husband Dean of Spartanburg; two granddaughters, Allyson Davis and husband Brett, and Ashley Wyatt and husband Jeremy, all of Spartanburg; three great-grandsons, Jackson and Conner Davis and Jett Wyatt; and three sisters, Betty Crosby of St. George, SC, Shirley Huggins and Myra Genobles, both of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by a son, Mark Edward Roper; sisters, Jenny Roper and Ruth Parris; and brothers, Buford, Fred, and Paul Roper. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM Monday, May 9, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, conducted by Dr. James Hilton and the Rev. Brian Arant. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Liberty United Methodist Church Athletic Field Renovation, 2095 Chesnee Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 790 Hwy 417, Moore, SC 29369.
