George Mcmillan

George Brown McMillan, 90, of White Oak Estates, died Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born April 30, 1921, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late George Folk and Helen Lucille Brown McMillan. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Rolen McMillan, and is survived by his current wife, Louise Martin McMillan, of the home. Mr. McMillan was a graduate of Wofford College and earned a graduate and post-graduate degree at USC. He joined the U.S.Army during World War II and served in a camp in Virginia before being sent to the Far East and the Philippines. He was there when Japan surrendered. After discharge, and still feeling loyal to his country, he joined the Army Reserves and then the National Guard. He spent over 30 years of service with them and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was principal of Boiling Springs High School from 1960-1985 and a former Cherokee County administrator, teacher, and coach. He was a member of Boiling Springs First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and taught Sunday School. He was a Mason, an artist, avid book collector, journalist, and poet. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Bronwyn Cox (Jerry) of Lake Bowen, Inman, SC, Marilyn Clarkson (Phil) of Cowpens, SC, and Teresa "Terry" McMillan of Spartanburg; a granddaughter, Alice Cox of Greenville, SC; two grandsons, Adam Clarkson of Las Vegas, NV and Mark Clarkson of Cowpens. He was predeceased by his son, George "Chuck" Brown McMillan, Jr. Visitation will be 12:45-1:45 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel, conducted by Minister Cynthia Quillen. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina, PO Box 21523, Columbia, SC 29221; or to the Cancer Society of Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties, PO Box 1582, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
