George E. Mathis, 86, of Pacolet, SC went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at The Inverness of Spartanburg. Born March 21, 1935 in Cherokee County, SC, he was the son of the late Albert and Mary Rogina Harris Mathis.
George married the love of his life, Ruby Lynn Wells Mathis, on January 6, 1956 and they were blessed to share 64 years together. They enjoyed many adventures with their family and friends, especially at Sunset Beach, NCand Gatlinburg, TN. They never met a stranger, and to know them was to love them. They had a son, Randy Mathis (Sharon), and a daughter, Debbie M. Padgett (Darryl). George loved his five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, all of Pacolet, SC, and his sister, Linda Ross (Ricky) of Gaffney, SC.
Mr. Mathis was a US Army veteran who volunteered with the Suburban County, GA Fire Department while in service. After returning home, he volunteered with the Pacolet Mills Fire Department. George worked as a repairman and salesman in electronics before becoming an instructor and Department Head at Spartanburg Community College.
He was a faithful member of Brown’s Chapel Baptist Church for more than 60 years where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, choir member, Bass Guitar player, Brotherhood member, Young at Heart member and Trustee.
The family would like to offer their appreciation and thanks to the staff at The Inverness of Spartanburg and Compassus Hospice of Gaffney, SC.
Visitation will be 2:30 – 3:30 PM Friday, September 17, 2021 at Brown’s Chapel Baptist Church, 350 Green Street, Pacolet Mills, SC 29373. A funeral service will be at 4:00 PM at the church, conducted by The Rev. Stephen Owens, The Rev. Chip Coleman, and The Rev. Ralph Jett. Burial will follow in Pacolet Memorial Gardens, 141 Memorial Drive, Pacolet, SC 29372.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brown’s Chapel Baptist Church, 350 Green Street, Pacolet Mills, SC 29373. The family will be at the home of Darryl and Debbie Padgett.
