George Haynes

November 28, 1926 — February 5, 2010

George McKendree Haynes (Mac), 83, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, February 5, 2010, at his home. Born November 28, 1926, in Cross Anchor, SC, he was the son of the late Barney Smith and Irene Lucus Haynes. He was first married to the late Sue Cook Haynes. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School in the Class of 1944 and Wofford College in the Class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a cryptographic technician with the rank of Sergeant. Mac loved athletics of all kinds. He played on the Wofford baseball team and was later an avid golfer. Mac founded several businesses: Whitestone Chemical Company, Haynes Chemical Company, Haynes Travel, and was a highly regarded chemical consultant. He was a member Emeritus of the American Chemical Society and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. Mac was a former member of the Spartanburg Country Club and the Piedmont Club. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Walker Haynes; two children, Susan Haynes Hayes of Spartanburg, and G. M. Haynes, Jr and his wife Nancy of Liberty; a sister, Marge Sexton of Isle of Palms, SC; a sister-in-law, Nancy T. Haynes of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Virginia Hayes Wood, G.,M. Haynes, III, and Katherine M. Haynes; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank his caregivers, Patty Culbreath and Patricia Lane. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Heather B. Humphries. Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P. O.
