George Bobo

March 20, 1930 — March 1, 2013

George A. Bobo, 82, of Spartanburg, entered into eternal rest Friday, March 1, 2013. Born March 20, 1930, in Clinton, SC, he was a son of the late A. B. and Frances Addy Bobo and husband of Sara Jean Osment Bobo for 64 years. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Mr. Bobo graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1947 and the first 12th grade graduating Class of 1948. He was the featured running back known as the "galloping ghost" on the 1945 undefeated Crimson Tide football team and also played basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the South Carolina Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1991 and for many years coached Little League baseball and football teams sponsored by the Rotary Club and Evening Optimist Club, helping instill values and mold the lives of his young players. In 1991 Mr. Bobo retired from Kohler Co. after 34 years of service and moved to Lake Murray where he enjoyed 15 years with his family and friends before returning to Spartanburg. Proud to proclaim him as father and grandfather are his daughter, Cathy Bobo Watkins (Ron); sons, Russ Bobo (Jody Vermont) of Spartanburg, Jackie Bobo (Sharon) and Brett Bobo (Cheri), all of Chesnee; grandsons, Colin Watkins and Austin Bobo of Greenville, SC; granddaughters, Lauren Watkins, Torri Bobo, Hannah and Kierra; sister, Annette Bobo Gero of Pittsfield, MA; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Sara Bobo Bradley, and a brother, Billy Bobo. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Southside Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM at the church, conducted by the Rev. James Nugent and the Rev. Dr. Schuyler Peterson. Family and friends will celebrate the life of an honest man of character and integrity, always willing to extend a helping hand. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 316 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
