Gene Ascher

June 18, 1944 — July 25, 2014

Eugene Edward Ascher, age 70, entered the glories of his home in Heaven on Friday morning, July 25, 2014. A native of Rockford, Illinois, "Gene" was born to LeRoy and Dorothy (Gasmund) on June 18, 1944. At age 13, he and his brothers assumed the operation of the family farm after the death of their father. Gene graduated from Winnebago High School in 1962. He married his high school sweetheart, Julie Ann (Burd), on April 18, 1964. They celebrated 50 years of loving devotion to each other in 2014. After a short career in farming, Gene began working as a truck driver until he retired from USF Holland in September of 2006. The greatest event in Gene's life happened during the winter of 1962 when he and Julie invited Jesus Christ to be their Lord and Savior. Thus began 52 years of faithful, Christian service that resulted in all of their children entering full-time Christian ministry. Eugene is survived by his adoring wife, Julie, and their three children: Michael (and Renee' Sanders Ascher) of Chesapeake, Virginia; Jerry (and Lori Burke Ascher) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Dawn (and husband Tim Schlichting) of Moore, South Carolina. He is preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Dorothy Ascher, his brothers James and Vernon, and a nephew, James "Andy" Ascher. He is survived by two brothers, Richard and Kenneth. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren: Benjamin (and Rachael Sterling Ascher), Emily, Christopher, Tiffany, Lauren, Wesley, Kaylin, Mindie, Ryan, Torrey, Garrett, Trent, Trevin, Caitlin, Nathaniel, Julianna and Ascher. Friends are invited to the visitation from 12:30 to 1:45 PM Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Cleveland Park Bible Church, 711 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, SC 29303. A praise service will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastor Ken Casillas officiating. Interment will be in the cemetery at River Hills Baptist Church, 5762 Reidville Rd., Moore, SC 29369. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be designated to the Cleveland Park Bible Church Building Fund, 711 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
