Frances Hardy

Frances Octavia Holland Hardy, 94, of Spartanburg, SC, departed this life on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. A native of Spartanburg County, Frances was born October 27, 1919 to Patra Bearden Holland and Charles Adolphus Holland. She was married to the late William Dixon (Dick) Hardy for forty six years. After graduating from Spartanburg High School, she attended Converse College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree with the class of 1940. She held a position with Lockwood Greene before her marriage, and later taught in Spartanburg District 7 schools. In later years after Dick passed, she volunteered at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. A devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she loved her family dearly and will be missed by all. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son and daughter-in-law, William Dixon (Billy) Hardy and Nancy Humphries Hardy and her granddaughter, Anna Maxwell Hardy of Spartanburg. Also surviving her are nieces and nephews, Dorothy Snyder Randall of Atlanta, GA, George William and Cindy Snyder of Sarasota, FL, Elizabeth Belk Smith and Lee Smith of Prosperity, SC, Dr. H. Clinton Belk and Ann Belk of Spartanburg, Roger Wesley Belk of Charleston, SC and Patra Holland Swope and David Swope of Bullard, TX. Frances was predeceased by all of her siblings and their spouses, including her best friend and twin sister, Dorothy Holland Snyder and George William Snyder, sister, Hazel Holland Belk and Harry Clinton Belk, sister, Ernestine Holland White and James Nelson White, and her brother Charles Adolphus Holland Jr., and nieces, Holly White, and Jeanne Phifer, and nephew, James White. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 PM, Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307 conducted by Rev. David E. Nichols. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306; Mobile Meals Service, P. O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or to the charity of your choice.
