Flora Powell

Flora Marrujo Powell, 76, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, April 21, 2017 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born May 24, 1940 in Roswell, NM, she was the daughter of the late T. L. (Joe) and Isabel Carrillo Marrujo. She was married to the love of her life for 58 years, Gilbert Dale Powell. Flora was retired from Hoechst-Celanese after 17 years of service as a lab technician. After retirement, she served as a Spanish-English translator in several schools and in the community. She was a member of First Baptist-North Spartanburg where she was also a member of the choir. She loved music, ceramics, traveling, and was a wonderful cook. Survivors include her husband, Gilbert Dale Powell; daughter, Cindy Hart (Bobby); Gilbert Dale Powell, Jr. (Tracy) and Danny Powell, all of Spartanburg, SC; seven grandchildren, Ashley Hart, Kimberly Wood, Brittany Millan, Justin Powell, Jacob Powell, Bentley Powell, Tyler Hollingsworth; five great grandchildren, Axton, Easton, Breely, Hudson, Perrin; eight sisters reside in New Mexico, Texas, and California, Marry Lou Torres, Prestina Blackmon (Tommy), Elizabeth Romero (Al), Cecelia Lopez (Johnny), Nadine Pittman (Randy), Rita Thomas (Robert), Rosmary Resta (Mark), O'Shanna Garcia (Andres); five brothers reside in New Mexico, Charlie Marrujo (Anna Mae), Leo Marrujo (Lillian), Irvin Marrujo, Joe Marrujo, Toby Marrujo; two brothers-in-law reside in Spartanburg, SC, J. D. Powell (Sandra) and Kenneth Powell; and her best friend, Jolene Crocker of Spartanburg, SC. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her grandparents; sister, Adelina Marrujo; brother-in-law, Prese Torres; two granddaughters, Brandy and Gabrielle Powell; and her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Powell. Visitation will be 12:30 - 2:30 PM Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral service will be 3:00 PM at the chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Michael S. Hamlet. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church-North Spartanburg, c/o Choir Fund, 8740 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, SC 29316.
