Flora Maye Dodson Helton was united with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 2, 2023 at age 93. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
Flora Maye was born on October 2, 1929 to Walter Perry and Essie Berryhill Dodson in Fayette, AL. She and her sisters, Lora Faye and Elreta (Boots), grew up in the Mount Vernon community. She attended Fayette County High School where she was Homecoming queen her senior year. After graduation, she and her twin sister, Lora Faye, moved to Birmingham where she attended business college. She was a long-term employee of Briarwood Presbyterian Church Bookstore. She was a member and enthusiastic volunteer with South Avondale Baptist Church. She loved gardening, birdwatching, playing bridge with her friends, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Janice Helton Moore (Paul) of Inman, SC, Steve Helton of Houston, TX and Carol Helton of Birmingham; and grandchildren, Rachel Moore Burnett (Ryan) and Cara Moore of Inman, SC. The family is especially grateful to her caregivers: Annie Dill, Thelma Amey, Sharon Rodgers, and Leila Jackson. They are also thankful to Oasis Hospice for their care.
Visitation will be 11:00 – 11:45 am on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at The Church at Grants Mill, 6001 Old Leeds Rd, Irondale, AL 35210. Services will follow at the church at 12:00 pm with The Rev. Dr. Paul Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Fayette, AL at 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church at Grants Mill or the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Fund in Fayette, AL.
