Evelyn Gillespie Winkler, 97, passed away August 3, 2024, in Boiling Springs, SC. She was born on February 5, 1927, the daughter of the late Major Teccoa Gillespie and Inez Elva Rowland Gillespie. Evelyn is the widow of James M. "Wink" Winkler, her loving husband of 47years.
She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Otis Elevator. She was a member of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron. Evelyn enjoyed traveling around the country with her husband, Wink and their friends. One of her most memorable trips was to the Holy Land, it was the dream of a lifetime. She was a devoted member of the Baptist church. Throughout her life she found great strength in her faith.
Aunt Evelyn will remain in the hearts and memories of her family and friends.
She is survived by her brother, Ralph Gillespie; sister-in-law, Hazel Galloway; nieces and nephews, Mike Gillespie (Carey), Portia Walker (Steve), Max Gillespie (Belinda), Alan May (Teri), Robert May, Scott May, Christy Tolerico (John), Tom Gillespie (Sandy), Julie Smith (Glen), Bob Gillespie (Jane), Becky Simmons (Jim); and many great and great - great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Ray Gillespie and her sister, Maxine May.
Visitation will be 11:00-11:45 AM Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at The J.F. Floyd Mortuary, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306, with funeral service following in the chapel at 12:00 PM, conducted by Chaplain Shawn O'Shields. Burial will be held privately in Seneca, SC.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Evelyn, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 901 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, or online.
