Evelene "Effie" Wilson Thompson, 80, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, after a long illness with COPD. Born May 11, 1931, in Landrum, SC, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Maybell Culbreth Wilson. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. A graduate of Landrum High School in 1949, Mrs. Thompson was also a graduate from the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1952. She retired from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after 25 years of service. Effie was a former member of Three Pines Country Club, Carolina Country Club, and the Ladies Golf Association. Mrs. Thompson found great joy spending time with her family whom she dearly loved. She was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and neighbor to many. She loved playing golf, working in the yard, reading, sewing, and working crossword puzzles. Effie will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her devoted husband of 58 years, Ray E. Thompson, Sr.; four children, Lynn Thompson of Spartanburg, Kim Godwin (Winston) of Charlotte, NC, Ray E. "Chuck" Thompson, Jr. (Maria) of Spartanburg, and Jane Godwin (David) of Greenville, SC; 11 grandchildren, Will and Ben Fowler, Ashley Brown, Anna Kendrick, Courtney Godwin, Kimberly Guy, Amy and Mary-Chase Godwin, Alan, Luke, and Jennifer Godwin; two step-grandchildren, Natalie and Nathan Kimbrell; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Smith of Campobello and Nancy Smith of Landrum. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Burrell; and two brothers, Posey and Pete Wilson. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 AM Saturday, March 17, 2012, at St. James United Methodist Church. A service to celebrate her life will follow at 11:30 AM, in the church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Gareth Scott and the Rev. Blake Kendrick. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
