Eva Fulbright

July 15, 1933 — November 18, 2014

Eva Nell Brown Fulbright, 81, of Spartanburg, died November 18 at Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care after a long illness. Born July 15, 1933, in Franklin County near Carnesville, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Martin Brown and Florence Elrod Brown Wyatt. The family moved to Powdersville, SC, in 1943. The daughter of a sharecropper, she developed a love of learning, a gift for writing and storytelling, and an appreciation for the beauty of nature. Eva married Henry Robert Fulbright in 1951. After her husband's tour in Korea, the couple became one of the first to live in married housing at Clemson University. They then lived in Abbeville for seven years, and in 1965 moved to Spartanburg. Eva's roots gave her a passion for gardening and camping, which the entire family enjoyed together. Eva always stayed active and creative through sewing, macramé, and even belly dancing class. In 1973 work outside the home led to managerial positions with Merita Bread Company and Dolly Madison. In 1983 she became a manager with Family Dollar and continued her work in retail with Belk Hudson in 1987. Eva retired as a buyer and department manager for The Leader in downtown Spartanburg in 1996. Eva was very involved in the Eastern Star Roebuck Chapter #216. Some of the offices held were that of Deputy Grand Marshal, Worthy Matron, Associate Matron, Associate Conductress, and Adah. She served on many committees locally and for the state. For years Eva wrote poems and stories of actual family events growing up during the Great Depression, many of them comical and perfect for bedtime stories to now three generations. In 2007 she participated in the Writer in Place Symposium held at Wofford College. In 2009 Pieces of Me, The Nell & Jefferson Stories by Eva Nell was published. In February 2010 she participated in a book signing for local Spartanburg authors. She was delighted to see her book available at The Hub City Book Shop and on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Lulu.
