Ethel Baier

Ethel Alice Mast Baier, 97, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, December 7, 2015, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born April 11, 1918, in South Haven, MI and reared in Coloma, MI, she was the daughter of the late William and Bertha Steinke Mast and a graduate of Coloma High School. She was married in June 1946 in Benton Harbor, MI to Frank Oliver Baier who preceded her in death in August 2002. Following her marriage to Frank they lived in Pittsburgh, PA for many years. Mrs. Baier worked as a technical draftsman with a local mechanical engineering company. She worked as a volunteer in one of the suburban hospitals in the Pittsburgh area and was a creative seamstress and quilter. She enjoyed creating numerous crocheted and knitted items as well as a collection of hand sewn quilts. She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Emsworth, PA and after moving to Spartanburg in 1988 to be closer to family, she joined Nazareth Presbyterian Church in Moore, SC. Surviving are her son, Michael Francis Baier and daughter-in-law, Susan Stearns Lovejoy Baier; grandchildren, Michael Franklin Baier of Sumter, SC and Kimberly Lovejoy Baier of Anderson, SC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Ralph William Mast. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 12, 2015, at Nazareth Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Julie Schaaf. Burial, at a later date, will be in Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
