Essie Mae Walker McCartha, 86, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at her home. Born August 19, 1928, in Lindale, GA, she was the daughter of the late Emmanuel and Roselle Walker. In her formative years she played basketball and was a cheerleader. Essie married the love of her life, Elliott McCartha in 1947. They were together for 58 years until his passing in 2005. Essie and Elliott moved around the country before settling in Spartanburg in 1957. There they would raise a family and make a multitude of friends. Essie enjoyed bowling, gardening, and socializing with the ladies of Huntington Woods. She always kept everyone laughing with her silly antics and spunky personality. In addition to her parents and husband, Essie follows her sister, Emily Swindle into the next great journey. She leaves behind many who love and will miss her immensely, beginning with her surviving sisters, Evelyn Ricks and Bobbie Jean Powell, both of Lindale, GA; her children, David McCartha of Spartanburg, SC, Diane (Erik) Anderson of Moore, SC, and Steve (Sylvia) of Visalia, CA; her grandchildren, Steven McCartha, Ginny Van Alstine, Michael McCartha, Teddy McCartha, and Laura Lowe; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special neighbor, Ralph Smith. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, December 7, 2014, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by The Rev. Joanne R. Hull.
