Essie Mae Crisp Lawter, 85, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at her home. Born July 21, 1923, in Swain County, NC, she was the daughter of the late W. H. and Ollie Bethaney Farley Crisp and widow of Theodore Lawter. She was retired from Firestone Steel and was a member of Una First Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Lawter and his wife Arrie, and Dallas Lawter, all of Arcadia; two daughters, Darlene Horne of Duncan, and Bernice Thompson of Gaffney; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Earlie Crisp of Pauline; and a sister, Dessie Hibberts of Montgomery, AL. She was predeceased by a son and daughter, Phillip H. Lawter and Patricia Young. Visitation will be 12:00-1:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Una First Free Will Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Church conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Cash and the Rev. Orville Brown. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to SRMC Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302. The family is at the home.
