Elsa Mae Spivey Payne, 83, of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at RoseCrest . She was the widow of Kenneth H. Payne, who predeceased her in 2004 after 55 years of marriage. Born April 2, 1927, in High Point, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ervin M. Spivey and Omie Mae Cagle Deaton. Elsa was predeceased by an infant sister, Gloria Marlene Spivey, and a son-in law, Steve Roberts. Elsa retired from C&S Bank as a Branch Manager. She was a member of Saint James United Methodist Church and active in the Adult Chancel Choir until her illness. She was past Treasurer of the Upper Room Sunday School Class, a member of the Wesleyan Circle, and a member of the Shadetree Musicians at Southside Baptist Church. Survivors include four daughters, Debbie Roberts of Spartanburg, SC, Kay Casey and her husband Tony of Blythewood, SC, Ginny Parker and her husband Hal of Walhalla, SC, and Michelle Connell of Franklin, NC; a granddaughter, Ashley Waldrop; eight grandsons, Kenny Brown and his wife Melissa, Tommy Brown and his wife Nikki, Danny Brown, Ryan Casey, David Casey, Jonathan Waldrop, Jeffrey Connell, and Justin Connell; one great-granddaughter, Carson Mae Brown; and three great-grandsons, Austin Grant, Jamison Brown, and Addison Brown. Visitation will be 1:00-2:45 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Saint James United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the church, conducted by the Rev. William Francis Malambri, III. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Complex. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The Upper Room Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. James United Methodist Church, 213 Lanford Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
