Elmer Earl Burch Sr., 90, of Spartanburg died Friday, January 28, 2011 at Dillon Pointe. Born February 4, 1920 in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Joseph Clyde and Donnie Shackelford Burch. Mr. Burch served during World War II with the 73rd Bomb Wing on Saipan. He was awarded Presidential Citations, Air Medals, and Distinguished Flying Crosses having flown 35 missions over Japan. He was a member of American Legion Post 28, a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, and retired from Spartanburg Community College. He is survived by his wife, Janie L. Burch; a son, Elmer Earl Burch Jr. (Scooty); two step-daughters, Jean Steele (Ron) and Mary Rogers (Jack); four grandchildren, Julia Seligson (Brian), Gregory, Christopher and Catherine Smith; seven step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Fowler and Beulah Cash. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florene Burch and his brother, Joseph Clyde "Pete" Burch Jr. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will follow at graveside. Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
