Elizabeth "Libby" Shores Carter

Elizabeth Shores Carter, 90, of Spartanburg, SC died Thursday, September 8, 2022. Born November 17, 1931 in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Dorothy Shores.

Libby went to school at Southside Elementary School and Spartanburg High School and attended Converse College on an academic scholarship, majoring in Chemistry. She married John Carter on January 19, 1952 at the Bethel Methodist Church parsonage in Spartanburg.

Libby worked as a teacher’s assistant at Green Elementary School in Jackson, MS. She also worked with Sonitrol Security company and as an Administrative Assistant to Dr. Charles Cox.

Libby loved sports (both playing and watching), was a passionate and talented gardener, and loved dancing. She was a line dancer with the Carolina Girls and the Senior Center Dancers.

Above all, Libby had a deep and abiding love for God. She was extremely active in her church, Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Spartanburg, joining in 1979. She taught adult Sunday School and Bible Study and was a member of the Altar Guild for many years.

Libby is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Carter; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Cindy Carter; grandchildren, Rebeka Romero (Travis), Kari Mason, and Kesley Carter; and great grandchildren, Travis, Joseph and Lilly Romero. She is predeceased by her parents, Carl and Dorothy Shores; brothers, Richard Shores and C. David Shores; son, Steven Carter; and her beloved husband, John A. Carter.

Visitation will be 1:30 PM, Sunday, September 11, 2022 at Saint Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 PM, conducted by the Rev. Jeremy Howell.
