Elizabeth Whitworth

Elizabeth "Betty" Barr Whitworth, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, August 13, 2017, at her home. Born February 20, 1925, in New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie McElroy Barr and widow of James Webster Whitworth. Mrs. Whitworth was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed gardening and bird watching. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, a volunteer in the church Food Pantry, and member of Prime Timers Senior Group and the Merry Widows. She received a Bachelor's Degree from Simmons College, Boston, MA, was a Girl Scout Leader, and retired from J. C. Penney. Survivors include her children, Audrey Whitworth (George Ryan) of Brooklyn, NY, Cathy Whitworth of Spartanburg, SC, Jim Whitworth of Spartanburg, SC, Jeannette Ford (Terry) of Inman, SC and Matthew Whitworth (Serena) of Spartanburg, SC; granddaughters, Lindsey Ford and Olivia Whitworth; grandsons, Christopher Schaller and Joshua Whitworth; great-grandson, Jaylen Kelley; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by sisters and brother, Audrey Goodall, Maude Atchason, Muriel Searles, and William Barr. A service honoring her memory will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 19, 2017, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Mia C. McDowell. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Memorial Garden. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Food Pantry, 101 St. Matthews Lane, Spartanburg, SC 29301; or Spartanburg Regional Home Hospice, PO Box 430, Drayton, SC 29333. The family is at the home of Elizabeth "Betty" Whitworth.
