Elizabeth Young

March 6, 1927 — July 20, 2021

Elizabeth “Betty” Young (Miller) was born March 6, 1927 and raised in New York City.  She attended nursing school at St. Vincent's Hospital (NYC) where she participated in the US Nursing Cadet Corp, a program to address nursing shortages during World War II.  Betty later attended Catholic University in Washington DC and earned a public health nursing degree. Upon graduating, she married William (Bill) Young and moved to Charlottesville, VA where she was a head nurse at the University of Virginia hospital.

Betty and Bill raised four children while living in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina before moving to Rock Hill, SC in 1971.  After raising her children, Betty attended Winthrop University where she received degrees in elementary and special education.  She worked as a special education teacher for 20 years in Rock Hill School District Three. She was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1983.  While living in Rock Hill, Betty was an active member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior for over 40 years.  She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Altar Guild Member, and Vestry Member.  Since 2013, Betty has lived In Spartanburg, SC where she enjoyed being near her grandchildren.

Betty had a smile for everyone she met and was always willing to help people in need. She was also known as a prolific sender of birthday cards to family members and friends, with special attention to cards for the little ones. She loved to hear stories about her family and to share her own. Her wisdom, laughter and love will be greatly missed by all.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband William L Young, infant son William L Young III, and her siblings Joan Hagan, Henry Miller and Duane Miller. She is survived by four children: Suzanne Wood (Robert), Andrew Young, Larry Young (Susan), and Amy Lawton (Boyce); six grandchildren: Teresa Kett (Brian), Benjamin Wood (Hannah), Emma Young, Eric Young, Will Lawton, and Drew Lawton; and four great-grandchildren: Liam Kett, Molly Kett, Owen Wood, and Elliott Wood.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Rock Hill, SC, followed by a reception at the church.
