Eleanor White

March 15, 1917 — December 2, 2009

Eleanor Stanley White, 92, formerly of 649 Palmetto Street, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Valley Falls Terrace. Born March 15, 1917, in Hampton, SC, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm James and Mary Rivers Stanley. She was a graduate of Furman University and, after graduation, received a fellowship at Furman for advanced study in piano. Mrs. White retired as an Associate Professor Emerita from Converse College. Before coming to Spartanburg, she was on the faculty of the Riverdale Country Schools, New York City, during which time she continued graduate work at the Juilliard School and Columbia University. Additional studies were done at the Universities of North Carolina and Colorado. After leaving Converse College, Mrs. White served as Director of Cultural Events at Skylyn Place for seven years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. Survivors include two sons, Alfred Marcus White, III, and Malcolm Stanley White and wife Janice, all of Spartanburg; two grandsons, Marcus White and wife Laney of Charleston, and Manning White of Spartanburg; a dear cousin, Mrs. Achsah Willis of Hampton, SC; and numerous relatives. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 2009, in the Chapel at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. David Alistair Renwick. The family will receive friends following the service in the Parlor at the Church. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery, Hampton, SC, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Henry Janiec Scholarship Fund of the Alia Ross Lawson Pre-College Department at Converse College, 580 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or to a church of one's choice. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Valley Falls Terrace for their love and devotion.
