Edgar L. Lewis, 87, formerly of Montview Street, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born April 29, 1921, in Spartanburg, SC, he was a son of the late James G. and Aura Rice Lewis and husband of the late Edna Thompson Lewis. He was a graduate of Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, retired as lieutenant with the Spartanburg City Police Department after 30 years of service, and was past president of the Spartanburg Police Club. He played for the Spartanburg American Legion baseball team in 1937 and 1938, and signed with the Philadelphia Athletics prior to being drafted into military service. He served with the 551st Division of Military Police during WWII. He was also a Mason and an avid golfer. He was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church for 20 years and Solid Rock Church for the past 7 years. Survivors include two sons, Keith B. Lewis and wife Judy, and the Rev. Randall M. Lewis and wife Oley, all of Spartanburg; four grandsons, Bryan Lewis and wife Tarin of Greenville, Brandon Lewis and wife Amy of West Palm Beach, FL, Blake Lewis and wife Eliza of Spartanburg, and Stephen Lewis and wife Laura of Charleston, SC; two granddaughters, Jenna Andrews and husband Jeff of St. Johns Newfoundland, Canada, and Pam Covil of Texas; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Brent Lewis; and a brother, Tommy Lewis. Visitation will be 1:30-2:45 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. John Cox. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
