Dr. Robert Neal Poteat, 82, was born in Spartanburg to Furman H. and Mary Eubanks Poteat on January 15, 1939. Dr. Poteat received his undergraduate degree from Carson-Newman University, and then graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina. After his residency, he became a practicing anesthesiologist in Spartanburg.
During the Vietnam War, Dr. Poteat “Bob” became an Air Force Captain and served overseas as an anesthesiologist for wounded service members. After returning and setting up his practice, Bob joined the Poteats in two of their great loves: the first was fishing, often pier fishing off the coast of North Carolina, which brought the family (and friends) together at every opportunity. The second was a love of animals, which led Bob to begin breeding English Mastiffs, and eventually to found Lakeview Kennels. Bob received many, many awards for Lakeview Kennels, and a number of his dogs became champions. He moved from Spartanburg to Chesnee in order to have growing room for the kennel, and to indulge his love of horses, which continued all his life.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Kathy Garduno, who has been a most dear friend and invaluable helper for many years, and to all the other caregivers who have helped with Bob’s needs.
Bob is survived by his sister, Betty Poteat, and his cousins Ann E. L. Phillips, James Harlow, Shannon Eubanks, and the Page family.
