Dr. Richard S. Wilson, 95, died Thursday, August 21, 2014. A U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was born in Chester, West Virginia, on February 9, 1919, a son of the late A. Earl and Ethel Glaser Wilson. A graduate of Mt. Union College, he received his MD degree from the University of Rochester, interned at Case Western Reserve University Hospital and completed his Surgical Residency in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Wilson began his surgical practice as a preceptor of Dr. Furman Wallace in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1951, was co-founder of the Wallace Wilson Brailsford Clinic, and retired as Emeritus Clinical Professor of Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina. He served on the Board of Governors and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and was President of the SC Surgical Society. He also served on the Mary Black Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. Dr. Wilson was an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver, Distinguished Eagle Scout, and co-founded and served as Post Advisor for the Explorer Medical Post at Spartanburg General Hospital. He was also an active member of the Lions Club in Spartanburg for many years and a Deacon and Elder of the Presbyterian Church. In 1984 he retired and moved with his now deceased wife Priscilla to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Since 2002 he and his wife, Evelyn, have resided at Bishops Glen in Holly Hill, Florida. Richard liked to play golf, dance, and travel. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers, Raymond and Robert; sister, Lois; sons, David and Robert; and his wife of 50 years, Priscilla Preston Wilson. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; sons, Richard (Nancy) of Columbia, SC, and Dr. Michael (JoAnn) of Middleburg, FL; daughter, Jean (Mark) Lee of Greer, SC; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, James (Sharon) Chancler of Fort Pierce, FL. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Saturday, August 30, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, at the chapel, conducted by his grandson, Mr. Richard Landrum "Lanny" Wilson. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
