Dr. Whitlock

Dr. Prentice E. Whitlock, 86, died Saturday, August 15, 2009, in Hicksville, NY. A native of Pacolet Mills, SC, he was the son of the late Carl F. and Bertha C. Whitlock. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, he held a doctorate in mathematics from Fordham University, a doctorate in music from New York University, and a doctorate in theology from Drew University. He was also a graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg and an ordained United Methodist Minister in the SC Conference. For 35 years he was professor of Mathematics at Jersey City State College in New Jersey. He was a lifetime member of Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church in Pacolet Mills; and until declining health, he served as organist and minister of music at Hicksville United Methodist Church. He will be remembered for his abundant kindness and loving spirit. He is survived by his sisters, Aughtry Robinson of Pacolet, Leasy McClesky of Marietta, GA, and Thelma Motts of Summerville. He was predeceased by brothers, Albert, Carl P., and Cotton Whitlock, and sisters, Margaret White and Betty Blackwell. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 2009, at Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church in Pacolet Mills. Burial will be at West Point on Wednesday, September 2, 2009.
