Dr. Speed

February 2, 1927 — July 24, 2011

Dr. George Maurice Speed, 84, loving, caring, and kind husband and father, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, after a long illness. Born February 2, 1927, in Birmingham, AL, the only child of high school principal Edwin Maurice Speed and elementary school teacher Sallie Mae Douglas Speed, George Speed displayed an unmatched love for his family and respect for his roots. Drafted into the Army in 1945, he proudly served his country in the Army of Occupation at the end of World War II. He finished his undergraduate studies at Birmingham Southern College after his military service was complete, and he later completed his Masters and Doctoral degrees in mathematics at the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN. After moving to Spartanburg in 1964 to assume the position of Mathematics/Physics Department Head at Converse College, Dr. Speed met and married Gail Elizabeth Williams after a whirlwind courtship; they were happily married for over 41 years. At Converse he enjoyed an almost 40-year career, during which he successfully transitioned from mathematics professor to head of computer operations, a professional challenge that he relished. Coming from a family of devoted educators, Dr. Speed loved to teach, and indeed he touched thousands of young minds and hearts in his career. All who knew him appreciated his intellect, humor, patience, integrity, and generosity of spirit. Dr. Speed is survived by his loving wife, Gail; his daughter Sallie, of Birmingham; and his son, George, and daughter-in-law, Hillary, of Stillwater, OK. His first grandchild is due on December 30, a fact that gave him immense joy in his final months. Visitation will be 2:00-3:15 PM Thursday, July 28, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 3:30, in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steve Holler and the Rev. Heather B. Humphries. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to: Converse College, 580 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302; or Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood St., Spartanburg, SC 29302.
