Dr. John "Jack" Monroe Shingler, Jr., of Spartanburg, SC died Thursday, April 27, 2017, at Spartanburg Medical Center, when the heart which doctors told his parents would not last long enough for him to start to school finally wore out the day after his 87th birthday. Born April 26, 1930 in Decatur Georgia, he was the son of the late John Monroe Shingler and Lucille Phippen Shingler. He was a loving husband for 62 years to the late Sara Starnes Shingler. Jack was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wofford College and earned his MD at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his internship at Spartanburg General Hospital. He began his medical practice as a General Practitioner in McCormick, SC prior to serving two years as an Army Medical Officer in Japan, accompanied by his family, during the time the U. S. military transitioned from occupiers to guests of the Japanese government. Jack returned to South Carolina to complete his anesthesiology residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He began the practice of anesthesiology in Spartanburg in 1960 and served area hospitals in private practice until retiring in 1999 after 45 years of medical practice. Jack grew up as a preacher's kid and his membership in Trinity United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, provided the opportunity for him to worship and serve in many ways. He was a member of the Paul Morris Sunday School class, sang tenor in the Trinity UMC choir, served on church, district, and conference-wide committees, went as a short-term medical missionary to Anguilla and Algeria, and traveled the world for United Methodist Women with his wife Sara. In the Spartanburg community he was a member of Lions Club and the Sertoma Club, served on the Girl Scout Board, and volunteered after his retirement at the Spartanburg Medical Center's medical library. He received the Wofford College Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award and was honored for his contribution and support of nursing at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Survivors include children, John M. Shingler, III (Jenni) of Greenwood, Lisa Shingler of Spartanburg, SC (former husband Peter K. Martel), Alma Shingler Mize (Sam) of Aiken, SC, Helen Shingler DeForest (Richard) of New Orleans, LA; grandchildren, Ivey Shingler (Ashla), Julia Shingler, P.J. Martel, K.C. Martel, Smith Mize, Elisabeth Mize, Will Mize, Roy DeForest, Jack DeForest; sisters, Mary Claudia "Tinker" Pendergrass and Woodley Shingler McEachern (Ted); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Lowndes Phippen Shingler; and stepmother, Elizabeth Withington Shingler. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 5, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Neal Y. Woods. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. There will be a private inurnment in Trinity United Methodist Church Columbarium prior to the service.
