March 29, 1934 — August 10, 2013

Dr. Carroll Lamb Mann III, 79, of Moore, SC, died peacefully on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born March 29, 1934, in Raleigh, NC, he was the son of the late Professor Carroll L. Mann, Jr. and Mary Jayne Hutchins Mann. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 33 years, Dawn Neal Mann; a brother, Jack Mann and wife Carol Ann of Tryon, NC; and a sister, Jayne Mann of Lake Lure, NC. He is also survived by a host of family and friends, including Lynne and John Blanton, Sammy, Matthew, and Summer Blanton, Jack and Lisa Mann, Lee and Fran Sessions, Kevin and Meg Sessions, and Landon Sessions. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Dr. Mann was an Eagle Scout. He was also a member of the Armed Forces, serving in the 11th and 82nd Airborne Division in Intelligence. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a BS degree in Zoology followed by an MD degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he did two years of general surgery and four years of neurosurgery, the last of which he was chief resident. He joined the Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic in Raleigh, NC, where he was in private practice for 26 years. He was a member of numerous medical societies, including the Womack Surgical Society in Chapel Hill. His passion was hunting and fishing all over the world, with multiple trips to Africa. He was a member of the North Carolina Museum of Natural History advisory board and collected numerous bird specimens from Africa for the museum. In 1977, he was president of the world's largest hunting organization, Safari Club International. He was also president of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and received The Governor's Award for Conservationist of the Year in 1978. He was inducted into the prestigious International Shikar Safari Club in 1994. He was also a member of the Southeastern Outdoor Writing Association, where he wrote numerous articles for most of the outdoor magazines. He also spoke to Congress regarding the value of sport hunting and the elephant population, and helped write the Endangered Species Act - from the perspective of the sports hunter. He received the "Sportsman of the Year" award and was a member of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He was a dedicated neurosurgeon who truly believed that those patients with different financial means obviously needed help. He would tell a patient if they could not afford surgery to pay him $5 dollars a month, and if they did this, at Christmas time, he would send them a card cancelling their bill. He was appalled that other physicians would put liens on patient's homes to collect their fees. He truly loved his profession and was very compassionate towards his patients. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 PM Saturday, August 17, 2013, at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
